Reports indicate that three-time O'Brien Award winner Lady Shadow has been retired from racing and will begin her broodmare career.
The seven-year-old daughter of Shadow Play - Lady Camella retires with a summary of 36-17-8 from 91 career starts and more than $2.28 million in earnings. She is both the fastest and richest offspring of her sire.
After successful two- and three-year-old seasons for trainer Gregg McNair, culminating with an O'Brien Award after her 2014 sophomore campaign, Lady Shadow flourished as an older competitor for trainer Ron Adams. Over her next three seasons, Lady Shadow captured nearly every major stake for her division including three straight Roses Are Red titles (2015-2017), the Golden Girls (2016), the Lady Liberty (2016), the Milton (2016), the Breeders Crown (2016) the TVG Final (2016) and the Chip Noble Memorial (2017). Lady Shadow picked up two more O'Brien Awards (2015 and 2016) in addition to the Dan Patch Award for older pacing mares in 2016.
The owners of Lady Shadow that campaigned her through her four- and five-year-old seasons -- David Kryway, Carl Atley, Ed Gold, and the BFJ Stable -- sold her to a group led by trainer Richard Banca last fall for $310,000 (USD). After another six-figure season of earnings at the age of seven, Lady Shadow was entered in the 2018 Harrisburg Mixed Sale. She sold for $210,000 with Ed Telle of Winchester Baye Acres signing the sales slip.
“She’s going to be bred this spring to Captaintreacherous, and she’ll be boarded at Hunterton Farm in Kentucky,” Telle told Harness Racing Weekend Preview. “Her racing days are over. She doesn’t need to prove anything else on the track.”
