Well Said's performances this year have got the racing world talking. Is he better than Somebeachsomewhere? Is he the best of all-time? In a winner's circle interview at the Red Mile yesterday, driver Ron Pierce discussed the possibility of the Western Hanover colt taking down 'The Beach's 1:46.4 World Record

.

Well Said has drawn Post 5 in the Red Mile's 11th race tomorrow, a $295,500 division of the Tattersalls Pace.

The division features speed on the outside and a good group of three-year-old pacing talent. While in discussion with track announcer Sam McKee yesterday, Pierce stated that there is a chance that the record may go down, but the all the variables will have to line up in his colt's favour.

"Well, there's no question that colt can go fast enough to break the World Record -- that's beyond a doubt -- but I don't think I want to take him out there and make him do it all by himself," Pierce said of the Steve Elliott-trained son of Western Hanover.

"If the race sets up his way -- and we get the right track conditions and everything, and I see I have a shot at it -- I'll go for it, but I'm not going to take him out there and just run him down to break the World Record."

Until the two horses have competed against one another there is nothing to compare.

Well Said is a good horse but the Beach is a great horse.
You can't compare apples to oranges. The two horses are different -- 1 had only 1 defeat in record time while the other has 11 defeats.

All I can say in comparing this colt to Somebeach Somewhere, what a joke. These peoples egos get in the way of reality.

Well mr pierce you say there's no question that the colt can go fast enough to break the World Record, but you don't think you want to take him out there and make him do it all by himself....WELL IN CASE YOU WERE NOT WATCHING....somebeachsomewhere was sent out there all by himself to break a world record an he did, with no help.Well said is a great horse....BUT THE BEACH IN IN A CLASS ALL BY HIMSELF.

With the loss today for WELL SAID in Lexington maybe we can lay to rest the comparisons between the Beach and Well Said as dominant race horses and as to which horse is better. The Beach destroyed his competition all but once in two brilliant years of racing. With 11 career losses Well Said comes up woefully short in on track performance to merit a strong argument in favour of his greatness. There is no case to be made on the track.

Well as i said in an earlier post Well Said is a good 3yr old but not a great one and his performance today at the red mile proves it. He has far to many losses to be mentioned in the same breath as the greats of the sport like sbsw, niatross, nihilator, cam fella just to name a few. Well Said is an over hyped over rated 3yr old in a year where it is not a very deep crop.

There is no question that Well Said is a tremendous racehorse. Big, handsome, well gaited, well mannered and fast. So was the "Beach'. He had all those qualities in spades. The Beach was undefeated at 2. Well Said was ordinary at 2. The Beach was bested once in a world record by a 'one off' wonder who never approached that kind of mile again and ended his season under a loud of controversy. The Beach battled another world Champion in Shadow Play in his 3year old year. I don't see a Shadow Play in this years class. Well Said has been beaten more than once this year already. The Beach set earnings records for 2 and 3 that remain safe from Well Said.
Arguing across time with horses that will never go head to head is a bit futile. As for the breeding, to say his breeding is a fluke is fodder for the uninformed. Hanover liked his breeding and felt he and his foals crossed well with so many breeding lines. They showed that faith with an amazing book of elite brood mares. Only time will tell who becomes a great sire. I do know this; racing history is full of dominant well bred stallions that never became great sires. As for the Jug, heat racing on a half mile track is just place dangerous. Until they come up with 'elite' purses for the Jug, you will have owners and trainers protecting their investment to retirement stallions. Put the Jug on a mile track and my guess is no one skips the event. Brent McGrath did prove he made one mistake in his handling of the Beach. He simply couldn't please everyone.

Gus To put Well Said in the same category as Somebeachsomewhere as a racehorse seems to be an exercise in futility. The bottom line is how will they advance the breed? Yes both raced well and both destroyed the opposition . Somebeachsomewhere destroyed his opponents like Niatross and Nihilator, but lets face it on breeding he was a fluke, like Niatross. He also did not contest the JUG, NOT HIS FAULT.. Yet Niatross and Nihilator did not pan out as sires. Well Said , did contest the Jug and destroyed the opposition but how many winners of the JUG have gone on to greatness in the breeding shed? Check on the past histories of the JUG and you will find that the PREMIER SIRES of the past 20 years did not win the JUG but they did SHOW UP! So what am I trying to say? Exactly this! You must contest the JUG! Heat racing aside it is the KENTUCKY DERBY OF HARNESS RACING. Racing chart lines and wins mean a lot when you are syndicating but the true worth of a horse is in the breeding shed. The JUG is the true testing ground of a sires worth but remember breeders, the horse that wins the JUG may not be the best sire, but to be the best in the breeding shed you must contest the JUG. It has been and always will be a true test of a horses endurance and stamina this and this alone separates the Standardbred from the Thoroughbreds. Well Said, Somebeachsomewhere, scan the JUG horses you may find the diamond in the rough?

When is all this foolishness about well said being as great a race horse as sbsw going to end, it is just plain silly. I do not care if he paces in 1:45 one race does not make you the greatest horse of all time, he is not even close. As a 2 year old he was only the third or fourth best and he has several losses as a 3 year old. Now come on lets get serious about where this horse stands amongst the all time greats. He is a good horse that anyone would be proud to own but is no where close to being a top 10 performer of all time.

Well said,Mr.Pierce! All of last year I watched SBSW & thought "my God!He's the best ever & he may never be equalled. Then along comes Well Said & he also is an unbelievable animal! This is the "stuff" that excites us as fans.I hope that things line up well for the horse tomorrow & regardless of the outcome, we have once more experienced a true champion.Good luck to all.

Do you still feel the same after his race on Saturday at the Red Mile? Great trip, brushed like a champion to the lead, but soundly beaten. Nice horse, not in the same league as the Beach.
