Dewey Beach pulled off an upset victory in the featured $6,500 Winners Over Handicap Pace on Sunday night at Rideau Carleton Raceway as he headed favourite Beach Runner A M at the wire.
Dewey Beach paid $19.60 to win as an 8-1 longshot in the nine-horse field.
Web Cam fired across the track from post eight to establish the lead through a :27.1 opening quarter with Beach Runner A M dropping in behind and Dewey Beach getting away third. Web Cam was a dominant leader though the half in :55.3.
As the field headed down the backstretch, Dewey Beach edged off the pylons flushing out the 2-1 favourite. Beach Runner A M progressed up alongside Web Cam as they approached three-quarters in 1:25.1 and took over command around the final turn while that foe began to tire. Dewey Beach was hot on his heels though and got by in the final strides for the 1:55 victory. Wildsville came on for third, finishing two and a half lengths behind the top pair.
Dewey Beach is owned by Determination of Westmount, Que. The four-year-old son of Somebeachsomewhere has now won three of his last five starts for trainer Eric Valiquette. Jacques Beaudoin was the winning driver.
