The winner of Wednesday night's $8,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 & 3 Handicap at The Raceway at the Western Fair District showed why she was both assigned the outside post and why she was pegged as the pari-mutuel favourite.

Regal Luck and driver Scott Young settled into fifth in the field of six while Katherine B (Alfie Carroll) carved out the early fractions. Young forged first up after the :28 opener and continued on against the pacesetter through the :58.1 half.

As Carroll and Katherine B picked up the tempo heading into the backstretch for the final time, Regal Luck was not packing it in. Quite the contrary, Regal Luck was closing the gap on the leader. By the 1:27.1 three-quarters, the difference was a just a length and diminishing with every stride. The duo were stride for stride at the head of the stretch but Regal Luck pulled away from the early leader. However, tipping off that one's back was Insincerity (Bob McClure), full of pace. Young and Regal Luck maintained the lead and hit the wire first in 1:56.4, three-quarters of a length ahead of Insincerity. Katherine B stayed for third.

Regal Luck (Stonebridge Regal - Lapidarys Luck) scored her second straight Preferred score, her 19th win lifetime in her 100th lifetime start for breeder/owner/trainer John Smith Jr. of Burford, Ont.
