With Bill Toffan, Morning Show Host at KX 94.7, a late scratch sick from the Announcer Idol line-up, his co-host Melissa Forsyth drew in off the Also Eligible list to call the evening's third race as part of Flamboro Downs' Announcer Idol competition on Sunday night.
Random Scandal ($11.20) was last at the half, but driver Trevor Henry maneuvered the four-year-old mare through rivals down the backstretch and fanned wide around the final turn en route to her first career win in 2:04.3 over the 'good' track, which was rated three seconds off.
"Random Scandal took that from behind!" called a surprised Forsyth at the finish. "Holy smokes! Where did Random Scandal come from? That was scandalous."
The winner is trained by Andrew McCabe for owner Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Guelph-Eramosa, Ont.
Badlands Princess and Tyler Moore finished half a length behind in second while Three Handbags and Anthony Haughan were third.
Strong Cam ($20) also scored a maiden-breaking victory on Sunday's card...at the age of 12 years old. Driven by Bob McClure for trainer Terry McCormick and owner/breeder Thomas Hughes, the Strong Clan gelding held on by a head to win the ninth race in 2:01.
Strong Cam began his career at the Port Perry fair last September before racing at Grand River Raceway and Flamboro Downs. He earned cheques in all 10 of his 2013 races with his first win coming three starts into the new year.
Henry dominated the 12-race card winning five times. In addition to driving Random Scandal, he won with Panedictine ($4.80), Cashem In ($4.90), In Dinos Pocket ($6.20) and Preferred 3 pacer Thats The Life ($4.70).
Announcer Idol continues every Sunday through March 23 with a different, local broadcast media personality stepping into the announcer's booth to call the third race on the card. At the end of March, fans and patrons will have their say by visiting the Flamboro Downs website to vote for their favourite race call. The winning announcer will receive a donation to the local charity of their choice, compliments of Flamboro Downs and Great Canadian Gaming.
Ted Michaels, Afternoon News Anchor at CHML 900AM, will take over the announcer's booth for race three next Sunday, January 26.
