OHHA Youth Camps Underway For 2008

The 2008 season of OHHA Youth Camps kicked off yesterday for young horse enthusiasts in the Flamboro Downs area. Eight local children are participating in the camp which runs through to Sunday when the kids will actually drive the horses they've been partnered with in two exhibition races.

These interactive day camps for kids ages 10-13 are designed for them to get up close and personal with horses. The Youth Camps offer hands-on and classroom experiences. Children learn about the safety around horses, basic grooming skills, how to clean a stall, parts of a horse, feeding and nutrition, history of the horse, harnessing a standardbred, jogging a Standardbred and much more.

Following Flamboro, OHHA Youth Camps will be hosted at the following locations:

  • Mohawk Racetrack – July 11 – 14
  • Georgian Downs – July 16 – 19
  • Grand River Raceway – July 22 – 25
  • Hiawatha Horse Park – July 28 – 31
  • Rideau Carleton Raceway – August 4 – 7
  • Kawartha Downs – August 9 – 12
  • Clinton Raceway – August 28 – 31

Participants are selected based on the submission of a 200-word written essay on 'Why I Want To Drive a Race Horse.' The completed essays are submitted to the appropriate racetrack by a specific deadline. There is a committee that reads all of the essays and chooses the final eight.
